What's the differece between "other " and "the other "?

"other" is unspecific, for example "there are other ways to use this word" - but we don't specify. "the other" will refer to something specifc, for example: "Don't take thie highway to the next town, take the other route." This implies there is only one other route and all parties involved in the discussion knows which one "the other" refers to.
