Grammatically, the first person is used to refer to oneself: the pronouns are I, me, and my.
The noun 'people' is third person plural. It takes a plural verb, and uses the pronouns 'they' 'them' and 'their'.
For example: "There are a lot of people in the supermarket. They are doing their shopping for the weekend."
