The whole sentence: I've never been near someone famous, she whispered to Ethan, knowing that she sounded like a hick but not minding.

A "hick" is an uneducated person from the countryside.

A redneck, hillbillie, hick, they all men a person from the south or back woods of America. All of which have a distinct country or southern accent when they speak English.
