This is how I got my Chinese name:
I wanted a Chinese name that had something to do with my English name. I asked a Taiwanese friend for a surname that begins with "h" because my English surname begins with "h". She sent me a list and I selected a few that I like. I particularly liked 何, I liked the look of that character. After that, I asked my first Chinese teacher for a suggestion as to a name. I said that I wanted it to be based of my English middle names - beginning with A and J respectively. She asked me if I wanted them to have any "deep meaning". I said that I didn't mind so long as they sounded nice together. She suggested 何安杰. Basically - ask your Chinese friends for help, but go to them with ideas. You can alternatively translate your English name into Chinese.
