Why do you call a certain species of dog terrier? Is it because they are very territorial? Or it's because they are trained to protect the land (terra)?

You're right about the 'earth' connection, and they have that name because they dig. Terriers can be used for hunting. If you chase a rabbit and the rabbit burrows underground, a terrier will dig down after it.
