Hi Ben, We say, need to do = する必要があります。することが必要です。 need to study = 勉強する必要があります。勉強することが必要です。 need to run = 走る必要があります。走ることが必要です。 いります is used for "need (noun)" and often used in conversation. For writing (of course ok for speaking), I recommend you use 必要です instead of いります。 Good luck!

Not an authority on the nuances of Japanese language, but I'd say that technically this might be OK, but usually this is not how people would say it, in my opinion. ~必要です。 ~しなければいけません。 are used quite a lot.
