the sequence of personal pronouns On the textbook, we are told that the correct sequence of personal pronouns is you he/she and I or we you and they. But why it should or must be like this and what cultural features dose this suggest? Which is right? You, he and I are all middle school students. You, I and he are all middle school students. He, you and I are all middle school students. He, I and you are all middle school students. I, he and you are all middle school students. I, you and he are all middle school students.

If you provide some examples, I'll be happy to take a closer look. As far as I know, the subject pronouns can be used in any order (grammatically), although it is polite to mention other people before yourself. We're talking about English, right? French clitic pronouns are a whole other story… Edit: my "smart"phone butchered "grammatically." Edit: Given your examples, I'd say that there's no rule, but "you, (s)he, and I" would be most polite. Most native speakers probably wouldn't notice, though. This is not grammar, just etiquette.

I am not entirely sure what you mean. If the pronoun stands in for the subject of the sentence, then it will be placed first (usually). If the pronoun is a direct object, it will be placed after the verb. If the pronoun is an indirect object, it will be placed after the direct object; etc. Is this what you're referring to? The pronouns on their own, don't really have a particular sequence unless they are put into a sentence. If you would like to give an example that you are having difficulty with, please show me and I'll try to help you. *Update* Seeing your update, all of the pronouns are subject pronouns, but the order doesn't really matter here much except that you would put "I" last. She, he and I ; He, she and I ; She, you and I ; You, she and I ; etc. All of these sound correct to me, but I have no grammatical explanation for it. It's just based on the feeling and sound of it to me. Whether there is necessarily a "correct" order, I'm not sure. I've just always heard "I" being used last, at least. Perhaps others can back this up for me too.
