ข่าวข้าวขาว I can't here the tones. ข่าว ข้าว ขาว When I speak Thai I cant master the tones.ข่าว ข้าว ขาว (Rice, News White) I can only hear Khaw, Khaw, Khaw. I cant speak, or hear the difference in tones. Sometimes when I speak thai I mess up the tones, and say things like... "I watch the rice" "I eat the news" Tones are so confusing!!!!!! What can I do?

You should start to learn on reading and writing system from begin(basic rules). This will help you know how to read and pronounce in the right sounds, and you will find your way how to remember each sound/tone. According to Thai tonal system, there is different between reading and writing, so you will learn how to remember "Three Groups of Consonants". i.e. mid/low/high class. To be affected by initial sounds. At first, go on mid-class consonants which can be produced in 5 tones(all tones both writing and reading), there are 9 consonants in this group: ก จ ฎ ฏ ด ต บ ป อ but will be produced in 7 sounds because ฎ and ฏ have the same sound to ด and ต respectively. There are 5 tones to deal with as mid(no tone mark), low(่), falling(้), high(๊) and rising(๋). e.g. pa: ปา(mid) ป่า(low) ป้า(falling) ป๊า(high) ป๋า(rising) To hear the sounds just copy this text without quotes"ปา... ป่า... ป้า... ป๊า... ป๋า" and paste it in google translate for slowly speed with 90% accurately and try to remember these tone sounds. Next steps is to obtain high and low class consonants: high-class(HC) has 11 consonants: ข ฃ ฉ ฐ ถ ผ ฝ ศ ษ ส ห (7 sounds without repeated ones) low-class(LC) contains 24 consonants: ค ฅ ฆ ง ช ซ ฌ ญ ฑ ฒ ณ ท ธ น พ ฟ ภ ม ย ร ล ว ฬ ฮ (14 sounds in total) these two groups have some relation sounds where both share the same sounds e.g. /kh/ => ข(HC), ค(LC) or /ch/ => ฉ(HC), ช(LC) etc. These are paired consonants of HC/LC. HC and LC will have only three tones(not five like MC), using only two tone marks(่ and ้) in written to produce three sounds in different ways. i.e. HC ขาว(rising) ข่าว(low) ข้าว(falling) <- /khao/ * use this text for google "ขาว... ข่าว... ข้าว" LC คาว(mid) ค่าว(falling) ค้าว(high) <- /khao/ * use this text for google "คาว... ค่าว... ค้าว" Pay attention! If you want to make out all tones from HC/LC, A conjoint HL class with paired consonants will do the job. i.e. /khao/ คาว(m) ข่าว(l) ข้าว, ค่าว(f) ค้าว(h) ขาว(r)

ข่าว ข้าว ขาว (News, Rice, White) khàw khâ khǎ If you know the 5 tones , you will hear the different. But if you don't know the 5 tones. You have to learn the tones first. ข is a high class consonant so there are only 3 tones. Enjoy your Thai
