Kuruš کوروش
ق and غ Salam dear friends, It seems that nowadays the two letters in question are pronounced the same: is that correct ? Recent teaching books say so whereas a more traditional approach seems to indicate غ as being pronounced "qaf" instead of "ghain" .... is it in fact more the "Arabic" pronunciation ? What do you think? How do YOU pronounce it ? Thank you so much.

Hi dear. In Farsi there is no deference between these two letters. But in Arabic language these are produced so different. غ and ق are written in English by Q or GH.

Hi Kuruš! These are different letters but some Iranians (mostly depends on geographical areas) pronounce both of them as «غ»! In some cases there is no difference between the meanings: بقچه/بغچه آقا/آغا بلغور/بلقور. In some others, In fact, there is a huge difference between two meanings. But, their similarity in pronunciation may mislead people. Someone can discover many wrong words (written as pronounced) with «غ» and «ق» even in mass media. For instance, some people may pronounce and write words (قالب‌ with Qaf) and (غالب with Ghain) as (غالب with Ghain) whereas they are completely separated words; «قالب» is a noun which refers to "template" while «غالب» is an adjective referring to "dominant".
