'put out' or 'stub out' is great. Extinguish is very formal and not quite correct, you can only turn on and off electrical things...

Zowee is correct. (Although I've never heard "stub out" used in American English.)
"Turn off" is used for devices and machines.
Turn off the television. Turn off the stove. Turn off the light.
