What is the meaning of 'extend' in the sentence?
Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is deterred from trying to ***extend*** that spontaneous, immediate, self-reliant kind of reading which would originally have met the work.

Hello David, in this context, "extend" means "offer". So, the sentence means that because the viewer has no influence on the value of the work, the viewer has no reason to offer a generous reading of the work. Hope that helps.
