To a native English speaker, the two sentences would describe the same events as they occurred in time - there would be no difference in how they were understood. Some strict standards of grammar would hold that the first sentence is more correct than the second, because the tenses match exactly. However (in my opinion) no reasonable English speaker would seriously fault anybody who used either form. Anybody feel free to disagree!
