It depends on if the lie is really "white" or not.
A white lie to me is twisting the truth to avoid hurting someone's feelings. The lie is generally harmless.
"Do you like this dress - it doesn't make me look fat does it?"
"Er...why no, it doesn't"
If the lie is self-serving - to get the person out of trouble - then it is not a "white" lie anymore. This is so even if the person doing the lying tries to tell themselves that this is not so.
"Were you out drinking with your friends?"
"Oh no - I was at the library studying."
"Since when do you come back from the library smelling like beer?"
