How do you think of white lie ?

It depends on if the lie is really "white" or not. A white lie to me is twisting the truth to avoid hurting someone's feelings. The lie is generally harmless. "Do you like this dress - it doesn't make me look fat does it?" "Er...why no, it doesn't" If the lie is self-serving - to get the person out of trouble - then it is not a "white" lie anymore. This is so even if the person doing the lying tries to tell themselves that this is not so. "Were you out drinking with your friends?" "Oh no - I was at the library studying." "Since when do you come back from the library smelling like beer?"

I never said that a white lie should be view in a completely positive light - only that it should be without the same degree of severity as other lies. To say that all lies are equally bad borders on the ridiculous. Let me put it this way - all the people who have ever told me that they prided themselves on being brutally honest have always valued the brutallity much more highly than the honesty. I have never seen an exception.

"But I hate a white lie! If you tell me a lie, let it be a BLACK LIE!!!" (from 'Eight songs for a Mad King' - one of my favourite musicals) ^^
