When subtitles are present, the viewer tends to focus on those and neglects the listening part. If you really want to improve your English, then force yourself to watch English-language TV without the subtitles (or transcription), and with a dictionary by your side. Another idea is to watch the film once without subtitles, to see what you can understand, and then watch it a second time with the subtitles. That way you will get to use and practise your listening skills in English, rather than simply practising your reading skills in your own language. An English transcription would be much better than subtitles (translations), but even then you'll only really be practising your reading skills.

Nora, watching movies/films in English and having the transcripts in English on the screen at the same time is very useful for both listening and understanding. Do not use the translations in your own language. If it makes your head hurt, watch 10 minutes, then stop. Write down 2-5 things you learned. Be happy. Try again another day! The sounds you hear (in English) and the words you see (in English) will sit in your brain. You will learn the phrases with the right rhythm. That is good.

I totally agree with James. I think nora22 means Arabic translation, because English movies which are shown on Arabic channels present arabic translation in the bootom of the TV screen. So, it does not help. You will focus on Arabic transcription because it's easier! yea, we often choose the easy ways to understanding. From my own experience, I did not find it useful.
