I suggest: 1. The National Centre for the Performing Arts, better known as the National Grand Theatre, is adjacent to Tiananmen Square. 2. The Diwang Building, less well known to tourists as Shun Hing Square, used to be the tallest piece of architecture in Shenzhen.

I agree, Neal's rewrites are much clearer and smoother. And "less well known" is probably your best option. To clear up about these "the's"... For "the National Centre for the Performing Arts" and "the National Grand Theatre", these are both descriptive (despite also being names). "Tiananmen Square" is the name of a place... no "the". Diwang Building can have either "the" or no "the". Using "Diwang Building" means you're referring to the building by its name. Using "the Diwang Building" means "the building which is called Diwang". You would use this to compare it with other buildings: "the Diwang building (as opposed to other buildings)..." I wouldn't use "the" for "Shun Hing Square", as I read it as a name, not a description to compare to other squares. Hope that makes things clearer. :) And... "Located next to" is fine, but "adjacent to" is much cleaner sounding, I agree. Not sure about "piece of architecture", as I think of only a chunk of building. Better to say "work of architecture" to indicate the compete building.

I agree with Neal, particularly with the 'the's he has deleted.
