When to use 마시다? I always see 먹다 when the object is a drink, like '너는 항상 커피를 먹고 싶어 하는군' It's so strange..is 마시다 only used with alcohol or what?

Ok. Like Pascal said, 마시다 is only for liquid things. 먹다 has very wide meaning for several things. Main meaning is like following. 1. 음식 따위를 입을 통하여 배 속에 들여보내다. So normally it includes drink liquid stuff or eat or chew n swallow all kinds of food. But there are more uses like following. 2. 담배를 먹다 - smoke cigarrette 3. 마음을 먹다 - make a decision 4. 나이를 먹다 - get aged 5. 겁을 먹다 get scared. 충격을 먹다 get shocked 6. 욕을 먹다 get blamed There are more but that's too much for now I guess. :) So yes, we Koreans mix 먹다 and 마시다 for liquid type of food or drink. Hope it can be a little help to you. Good day.

I think 타니아 is quite correct, but "커피를 먹다" is also acceptable. As it's been known already, "먹다" is used for foods, on the other hand, '마시다' is for drinks like coffee or tea or beverages, but sometimes '먹다' can be acceptable for drinks. However, '마시다' doesn't work for foods, always has to be '먹다'. I think it's because that the action of '먹다' includes the process of '마시다'. for example, "커피 마실사람?" or "커피 먹을사람?" (who wants coffee?) '소주 마시러 가자" (let's go for soju.) (soju is alcohol) '소주 먹으러 가자' is also acceptable.

I think so, because 마시다 means to drink. while 먹다 is to eat,,,,
