广义的定义是把年轻的女性叫做ギャル，到了1970年左右，把所有身穿流行服装的女性统称为ギャル。到了1980年泡沫经济年代，又特指年轻，活泼的女性。

狭义的ギャル，就是指收涩谷系风格（渋谷系ファッション）装扮影响的女性。
