What is a [late father]? I saw it on the cover of a book, but I know what it means.

Late in this way means 'dead '.
The person is saying that their father has deceased / died / isn't alive.

Good comments, but maybe an extra thing. Late means now dead. My late father bought me a car in 2010. This obviously means he is now dead, but while alive he bought a car.

A late father is a father that is deceased. So, if someone said "my late father", they'd mean their father wasn't around.
