Why do we say 'the husband(wife)' and not 'a husband' in the following sentences? 1. Usually the husband is the head of the family and his wife is his assistant. 2. Usually the husband is in charge. 3. Usually the wife helps the husband.

In a family, there is one husband and one wife. We therefore know which husband and which wife is meant. If you used 'a husband' and 'a wife' it means that the family contains more than one of these and you are referring to one out of many.
