" You, erm, your name is ..." ( ERM?) This is a sentence from a book I'm reading: " You, erm, your name is ... no don't tell me, er. steve? " What is the meaning of "erm" & "er." ? Thanks in advance, Tom

It is used as a way of pausing in a sentence to gather our thoughts.

This is the British version of American 'um' and 'uh'.
