Alexandra hat recht.
The perfect is much more in use in spoken German than Präteritum, Präteritum is almost only used for modal verbs (ich wollte, du durftest, wir konnten...).
Präteritum is used in books and newspapers.

Präteritum= simple past
Beispiel: ich machte
Partizip Perfekt = Past participle
Beispiel: ich habe ... gemacht. = Ich habe meine Hausaufgaben gemacht.
