When do you use one or the other? Are they interchangeable? спасибо!

Для means "for". It is followed by noun.
Для работы - For work
Чтобы means "in order to" or "to". It is followed by verb.
Чтобы работать - To work.
They are not interchangeable.

They aren't interchangeable.
"Для" it means for somethng.
Мне нужен рюкзак для путешествия. I need a bag for a trip.
"Чтобы " it means you have to do something for having something.
Russian don't use "for + verb ing", they use "that to verb"

Surprise! :) There is a compound conjunction - для того, чтоб(ы)...
E.g. Мне хочется назвать тебя женой
Не для того, чтоб всем сказать об этом... (К. Симонов)
It is used to introduce the subordinate clause, like the conjunction "чтобы". So in most cases they are interchangeable.
