What is the difference between

って just means "that". In this case, it seems to me like "言っている" is omitted from the sentence. Mr. Yamamoto says (or said) that he commutes........... What is omitted can be " I hear", "people say" or He says.... depending on the situation.

Is simply marking the sentence before that it was said by someone. So no、 って does not stand for と言いました
