Hello, My name is Benjamin and I currently reside in Istanbul, Turkey but I am originally from Long Island, NY, USA. I am a recent college graduate from The George Washington University where I earned my Bachelor's degree. I double majored in International Affairs and Political Science with a minor in Geographic Information Systems. I received my TEFL/TESOL certificate from the International TEFL Academy that is based out of Chicago, Illinois, USA in January 2014. I earned a final grade of 98% over an 11-week period and was certified shortly after that. In addition to the 180 hours of instruction I received, I have more than twenty hours of past practical tutoring and observation at the Global ESL Academy in Queens, New York. Recently, I have started to put earning my TEFL certificate to good use. Currently, I am a full-time English language teacher at a school in Istanbul, Turkey where I instruct young learners in my native language for 25-30 hours of lessons per week. I am not only able to help your average English learner but I can also help in the areas of Business English along with assisting Young Learners. I am proficient in all parts of the English language such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening. I ensure that each of my students also becomes proficient in learning about English grammar and vocabulary in order to improve their knowledge overall. In addition to teaching English, I also enjoy reading books, practicing my guitar skills, hanging out with my friends, and going to a live concert/music show in my free time. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions but I look forward to helping you on your journey to become a fluent English speaker. Thank you.

There are many criminological theories that can help us understand how certain economic factors influence the crime rates within the criminal justice system. In this study, I will discuss those that, based on empirical evidence, best explain these correlations. The classical theories of rational choice and deterrence, argue that individuals considered as free and rational beings make decisions based on a subjective estimation of the benefits and costs that these can lead to. (Akers, 2009). As costs, they mainly highlight the severity of the penalty and the probability of being arrested and prosecuted.

What is the most important characteristic that a person can have to be successful in life?

I think that the most important characteristic that successful people have are intelligence, honesty and charisma. I arrived at this conclusion when I was studying at my university and read some books about famous entrepreneurs. I did some research for an assignment on this topic and I also had to answer this same question.

First, when I mention intelligence, I mean the ability to find innovative and creative solutions for problems. Also, the ability to think up new products and services is important as well. People who come up with new ideas are often able to take advantage of them to make money, and to be their own bosses. For most people, not having a boss is a sign of success. This is unlike those people who are subordinate at their place of work and do not enjoy what they do and feel like their creativity is gone.

Second, honesty refers to the way that people behave not only in business but in their personal lives too. People who keep their success going in the long term are characterized by having a good reputation, which is earned by working in an honest way and being an exemplary model for others. Those who do not act honestly sooner or later end up in prison or ruined.

Finally, charisma is a very important characteristic when it comes to socializing. Charismatic people are able to get an extended network of contacts; therefore, finding the suitable person for help or advice in any situation is easy for them. Also, recognition from others is also a sign of success. All in all, successful people are characterized by being honest, charismatic and smart.

Choice No other mental task can be so challenging and exhausting, and yet so invigorating, as making a choice. Choice is a behavioral process that we undergo hundreds of times each day. These choices that we make can either affect our experience immediately or result in long-term impacts on our lives. From the type of breakfast cereal you buy to the location of your first home, choices have consequences that we can’t always fathom. I tend to overlook how important choice is in determining one’s destiny or fate in life. As human beings, we make so many choices each day that it’s difficult to discern from what’s valuable to what really doesn’t matter in the grander scheme of things. This also plays into one’s individual perception of what is and what isn’t important in life, which is a long debate that should be left for another thinker. The other day I was walking through the aisles of my local grocery store when I felt suddenly overwhelmed by the endless assortment of product on the shelves towering over me. Do we really need a hundred different brands of cereal? Picking one became an odd chore, as if having so many options meant I was being judged for which one I actually chose. Completely flummoxed, I’m not even sure which one I picked. Many people have quite a different situation. Many people will never see a hundred different brands of cereal on a supermarket shelf. Choice might be overwhelming sometimes, but to simply have a choice at all is a gift that we should not take for granted. My next bumper sticker will say: “I Choose Choice.” Many people living in the world today have very limited options. Their chance at choice is much lower. It is hard, in a country like this where choice is not only commonplace but can have actual, tangible effects, to imagine a world where choices have been restrained. As humans, we seek fulfillment and happiness, and to be restricted in our choices toward that goal is terrible. Next time, when you’re meandering in the cereal aisle, perplexed by all the competition, do not dwell for too long. Although breakfast is the most important meal of the day, your choice of cereal is not the most important choice you’ll make today. You know you’re going to get Honey Bunches of Oats, anyway. In the next few days, pay attention to your moments of choice. Big or small, recognize choice as the gift that it is, then make it a good one.

    Leave or Stay

I work in an HR department and I am responsible for social insurance. I have to deal with a huge amount of work everyday. I find it very difficult to make an improvement to my skills. As far as I'm concerned, you have to improve yourself, otherwise you won't get a pay increase or get more opportunities to change your job position.

If I quit my job, I would find another one and earn a pay increase but at the same time I would have to take a risk of becoming unemployment. I am thinking of leaving or staying at my company right now.

Smart phones, Dull people There is no invention more prominent in today’s society than the smartphone. It is used everyday for things as simple as making a call to as complex as using an application to pinpoint your exact location on Earth. I am the owner of an iPhone and it befuddles me to this day as to how a phone has come to be so advanced and influential within our daily lives. There’s not a couple of minutes that go by when I’m out walking where I see people absolutely absorbed to what’s happening on their smartphones, completely oblivious to their immediate surroundings. The great irony of the smartphone is that while it has improved communications through texting, calling, and social networking, our person-to-person interaction has been harmed by this technology. I fear that is a trend that is only going to get worse as technology continues to advance in the future. It can be a bit annoying to have a conversation or dinner with friends when some people are too busy answering a text or checking their twitter. I’m not against having a smartphone or against their usefulness, but the extent of their role in our daily lives is a bit startling. Give someone two seconds without anything to do, and they’ll whip out their phone. It’s basically a knee-jerk reaction at this point. Makes me wonder what we did before all of this. Does anyone remember? I recently watched a news report where they reported an increase in smartphone-related car accidents where people were distracted from texting while driving or pedestrians were too busy looking at their phones to look both ways before crossing the street. Some obituary, huh? Death by smartphone. I am sometimes guilty of paying too much attention to my smartphone and I am trying to limit the amount of times I use it during the day. It is a useful tool and has made many lives easier (or at least simpler). I can’t help but worry about the negative aspects of what is no longer a trend but a normal way of life. I was hanging out with friends the other day when there came a moment of stillness in the midst of conversation. One by one, like bugs to the electric blue light, each of them started to take out their phones. I was the only one not gazing into the alluring screen of a smartphone. It’s as if we’ve forgotten what to do with silence. We’ve given up sharpening our conversation skills for touch screens, and from this I fear we’ve grown dull.

IT cannot create an art by itself.

I read an article about a startup called Riff Station yesterday.
Riff Station analyses YouTube Videos and shows guitar chords for you.

I think this app is useful somehow.
But, I believe that music cannot be shown in a bunch of computer programs. This is because it's Art.
Guitarists always think about the chords and the chord degrees.
But the most important thing is tone and touch, and how they express their feelings.

So, if you really want to learn how to play a guitar, you should listen to the guitarist's tone, touch, and know their feelings.
I do believe that IT helps to make some issues become easier to solve, but IT cannot create the art itself.

Definitely NOT on Laogui's favourite breakfast-in-China List (3)

I was wandering through the old city of Hutongs here in hot, humid Yulin, and I emerged onto a busy thoroughfare, then crossed into a local 'wet' market. Hanging in rows were what looked like rats from a distance, but as I drew closer, they much more closely resembled the deadly enemy of the rat. This is a cat-dog-rabbit stall. I cannot make out the fourth character ... Mao-gou-tu shenme? Oh, maybe it's 'lv' donkey! 猫狗兔驴. Now, I can see the picture too, and it is clearly Mao-gou-tu-lv.

This city is home to the highly criticized Summer Solstice Dog Meat Festival where in 2013 over 10,000 dogs were consumed. I wonder if there is also a cat festival?

It was siesta time when I arrived, and the back-streets, alleys, and markets were all empty.

    'Daily Events'

Today, I was about ready to get my papers together to apply to school but I found it kind of hard because of some people. I really want to enter that school because I want to study Computer Science but it seems that my surroundings are opposing me and I'm really desperate to change that.

¿Qué tipo de baile es más popular en América Latina? ¿Es Salsa, Merengue, o Bachata? Yo no sé, pero quiero ver si alguien me puede decir de lo que han experimentado. Muchas gracias.
