Here's a powerful and interesting scene from the Tamil epic Manimegalai, one of the five great Tamil epics (Aimperumkappiyam). This scene is rich in emotion, drama, and moral depth. Scene: The Magic Bowl (Akshaya Patra) of Manimegalai Manimegalai, Kovalan Kannagiyin magal. Aval buddham kadandha oru gnaani. Aval eazhaigaluku(poor) unavu kodukka virumbinaal. Avalai oru Buddha munivar sandhithaar. Avanr avalukku “Amudha Surabhi” nu oru vedikkai paathiram koduthaar. Andha paathiraththil, “Yaaruku thevai padugiradho avargalukku mattum than unavu varum!” Aval romba santhosham-aagi, Nagaraththil ella eazhaigalukum unavu parimaarinaal. Manimekalai, daughter of Kovalan and Kannagi, chose a life of wisdom and service through Buddhism. She wished to feed the needy and hungry. A Buddhist monk appeared and gave her a magical bowl called “Amudha Surabhi” (inexhaustible bowl). From this bowl, Food would appear only for those who truly needed it—not for the greedy.
