Picture this: you’re standing at the coffee machine and a colleague comes over. You don’t know him very well. You both say hello and then you can’t think of much to say. You mumble* something about the weather (if you are British this is a sure thing. We love to talk about the weather) and then… nothing. Your mind goes blank* and you stand awkwardly looking at the coffee, wondering why it is taking so long to make… Or picture this: you’ve joined a meeting online and there are one or two colleagues already there. You’re waiting for others to join and you have to pass the time. But the same thing happens … you can’t think of anything interesting to say and there is awkward silence…. In this Real English Conversations Podcast Episode on Italki, Amy and Curtis (https://teach.italki.com/teacher/4672521) share some tips on how you can feel more comfortable when you’re speaking English and also a very important advice podcast about accent and pronunciation. There are a lot of students who want to lose their accents so that they can sound like native speakers. But when we break this down into what students want to be able to do, it comes down to these three goals: 1. To be able to speak more easily without thinking too hard, 2. To be clearly understood, 3. To understand what other people are saying And these three goals sound more like “I want to be able to communicate confidently and effectively”, instead of sounding like a native speaker.
