During the trial lesson we'll discuss your goals for the language and I will present you with various options for courses / textbooks / pedagogical approaches. You will get a taste of each textbook / approach so that together we can chose the one best suited to your goals and learning style.

These courses are for adults of any age who want to learn or improve their Latin. Regardless of whether you have no background in the language or have tried to learn a bit in the past, I can set you up with a learning program right for you and tailored toward your goals. Normally, I recommend Lingua Latin Per Se Illustata because I feel it is peerless in its presentation of the language and in the level of mastery it expects from the student. If you’ve started with another textbook/program, I would be happy to continue with that as well. If you are taking a college course, I would be happy to help you with concepts, but not with homework completion.

Beginning Latin for Adults

Do you have some Latin basics under your belt and would like to try your hand at reading actual literature? The Latin Vulgate is a great place to start! It’s interesting and important per se, and it’s well within reach for most rising intermediate students. Together, we can decide which version of the Vulgate you would like to read (Jerome’s Vulgate proper, the Clementine Vulgate, or the Nova Vulgata). While we are reading through the Latin text we will also look at the underlying Hebrew or Greek, which nearly always informs the translators’ choice in vocabulary, syntax, and style. This can also be a great entry point into text criticism, critical editions, critical apparatuses, etc. 

In addition to my master’s degree in Latin from Rutgers University, I am currently finishing a second master's degree at Seton Hall focusing on early Christianity. I am therefore quite familiar with New Testament biblical scholarship. My Biblical Greek and Hebrew are both quite good, as well. 

This course is recommended for students who have met all of the tenses in the indicative, the present active and perfect passive participles, and have at least begun to learn some subjunctive constructions.

The Vulgate Latin Bible

Teaching kids is one of my favorite things about being a Latin teacher. My lessons for kids are fun (and at times pretty silly). But they are also very much focused on learning the language. The kids learn naturally by reading and using the language. Only after that do we formally analyze how the language works … in a way understandable to kids!. 

These lessons can be used by homeschoolers as their primary language program. I can provide a syllabus to parents if needed. They would also be great simply for students who are interested in language learning / the history of other European languages / ancient history, etc. 

I prefer to use the book Lingua Latin Per Se Illustrata, for a number of reasons. If you would prefer your child to use another book / program, please check with me in advance to make sure I have access to it.

Beginning Latin for Children 7-12

I’ve been teaching teens Latin for nearly my entire adult life, and I still absolutely love it! Teenagers still laugh at my jokes but they are able to learn the language to a very high level! 

If you child is starting from scratch, I recommend Lingua Latin Per Se Illustata, for a number of reasons. If he or she is talking Latin already in school I will be happy to go over basic concepts with them, pre-read upcoming assignments with them, or go over things they may have gotten wrong on tests, and/or review homework assignments *after* the students has completed the work.
