Part 2 of 6. 

Jack, a pocket-sized blue book with yellow text and white pages, climbed up the library steps, knocked on the modern glass doors and was let in by the security guard. It was an hour before the library opened to the public. 

“Mornin’ Jack,” said the security guard. “I’ve been dying to see you this morning. Could you whip me up a Frappuccino?” 

Jack’s life swirled around coffee. Not only was it his profession, it was his passion and life’s purpose. The library café had been in his family for six generations. Ever since Jack was capable of walking on his two feet, he was working at the café. In due time, Jack had mastered all aspects of coffee making, from grinding and roasting beans to excellent customer service, and everything in between. His father supervised him closely, making sure their state-of-the-art coffee machine was used properly. When Jack was ready, his mother showed him how to create artistic designs using the frothed milk. 

“You’ll have to wait a bit longer,” replied Jack. “I’ve got some extra housekeeping to do this morning. I’ll get it to you at opening time.” 

The island café was placed in the center of the public sitting area. It was surrounded by seven medium-sized tables. Today Jack had to prepare a new shipment of Columbian beans by grinding them and storing them away. After doing that, he mopped around the seating area and wiped the tables. Finally, Jack sliced some cheese for his most popular item, the cheese bread rolls. 

Jack switched on his beloved coffee machine and listened to it hum as it warmed up. With his hand on the steam wand, Jack caught his reflection in the pressure and temperature dials of the machine. Looking back at him was a newly-discovered shiny white hair.

Inside a dusty workroom, an old craftsman held up a chess piece to the window. He rotated it in the sunlight and inspected its every detail. 

“Perfection,” said the craftsman. 

He added it to the set he had been building. Sixteen grey pieces sat on his worktable, all handmade and almost ready for sale. 

The craftsman felt very satisfied with his designs. He was ready for the final stage of the process. He picked up one of the pawn pieces and said, “What about you, my little friend? What colour would you like to be?” 

He reached for his paint brush, dunked it into glass of water and then into a container of paint. The grey pawn received a heavy coating of shiny white paint.

Fast-forward several years into the future. After repeated use and abuse, that little pawn’s proud white colour had faded. Areas of his original grey were visible. Because of this, whenever players assembled their chess set, they left this little grey-white pawn to the side. 

“Uhm, is that yours or mine?” said the white player. 

“It doesn’t matter. Put it back in the box and choose from the others,” said the black player. 

This little plastic pawn’s name was Gary.

El Mercado de la  “Gran Tenochtitlán”, era el lugar donde se reunían las cosas, almacenando alimentos, animales, objetos y una gran diversidad de productos. Este  centro comercial prehispánico estuvo ubicado en Tlatelolco, ciudad fundada en 1338 por los tlatelolcas, tribu mexica que se separó de los tenochcas, fundadores de Tenochtitlan y estaba situada en un islote al norte de esta ciudad dentro del lago de Texcoco. Su tianguis era el corazón de un hormiguero multiétnico, un centro de reunión e intercambio cultural al que comerciantes -conocidos como pochtecas- provenientes de toda la geografía mesoamericana e individuos, especializados en el comercio a larga distancia entre las distintas regiones que integraban el imperio mexica, e incluso más allá de sus fronteras, acudían a vender sus mercancías, así como a comunicar noticias recogidas durante sus largos trayectos. Esto incluía la información militar, ya que frecuentemente los comerciantes desempeñaban las funciones de embajadores, emisarios e incluso espías, que describían los ricos territorios que fueran propicios para futuras guerras de conquista. El gran tianguis de Tlatelolco se ubicaba al suroeste del área que conocemos como el Templo Mayor de la ciudad; operaba en un gran espacio al aire libre donde se reunían compradores y vendedores; habían alrededor numerosas habitaciones que eran utilizadas como bodegas y depósitos, siendo considerado el modelo prototipo de mercado en Mesoamérica. Su fama deriva de la gran impresión que dejó en los conquistadores españoles, quienes le consignaron en sus crónicas. Cuando los españoles llegaron a la cuenca del Valle de México en 1520, Tlatelolco era el eje del comercio y la economía en el Anáhuac por encontrarse en los linderos de la ciudad de México-Tenochtitlán.
