No existe evidencia científica que avale que este mes de septiembre  ocurra efectivamente un sismo de magnitud considerable.

México es un país ubicado en una zona del planeta que tiene alta sismicidad, por lo que tiembla todos los días; generalmente son sismos pequeños e imperceptibles para la población y en promedio cada 3 años se presenta algún movimiento de magnitud relevante. Esta sismicidad se manifiesta especialmente a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico con variaciones normales.


En las costas de Michoacán a las 07:17:49 horas (tiempo local) del jueves 19 de septiembre de 1985, a una profundidad de 15 kilómetros (km), inició la ruptura de una porción de la corteza que originó un sismo de magnitud 8.1. El movimiento del terreno a consecuencia del paso de las ondas sísmicas se percibió en el centro, sur y occidente del país. Ocasionó decesos y daños extraordinarios en Ciudad Guzmán (Zapotlán el Grande), Jalisco y Ciudad de México, ambas ciudades alejadas de las costas del Pacífico 275 km y 400 km de distancia, respectivamente.

La noche del viernes 20 de septiembre, a las 19:37:14 h (tiempo local) en la  costa occidental de Guerrero, ocurrió el segundo evento más importante de esta secuencia, cuya magnitud fue 7.6 y que causó el colapso de muchas estructuras dañadas primeramente por el evento principal. El total de pérdidas se cuantificó en 4 mil 100 millones de dólares, más de 30 mil heridos, 150 mil damnificados, 30 mil viviendas destruidas y más de 60 mil con daños. La cifra oficial fue de 6 mil decesos. 

En los límites de los estados de Puebla y Morelos (8 km al noroeste de Chiautla de Tapia, Puebla) a las 13:14:39 h del martes 19 de septiembre de 2017, a una profundidad de 51 km ocurrió un sismo de magnitud 7.1.

La Ciudad de México, Morelos, Puebla, Estado de México, Guerrero y Oaxaca reportaron 228, 74, 45, 15, 6 y 1 decesos; respectivamente. El costo de las afectaciones se estimó en 62 mil 99 millones de pesos.
