Description
Kerala's history in one narrative, from the beginning — and it belongs in a language course because almost every structural feature you have learned has a date attached. The Sanskrit layer arrived at a particular time. The Portuguese furniture words arrived in a particular century. The loss of verb agreement happened at a particular moment. Knowing when turns a list of facts into a story, and stories are what memory is built for. THE VOCABULARY FIRST ചരിത്രം (charithram) history · രാജാവ് (raajaavu) king · രാജ്യം (raajyam) kingdom യുദ്ധം (yuddham) war · കപ്പൽ (kappal) ship · വ്യാപാരം (vyaapaaram) trade സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം (swaathanthryam) freedom, independence കേരളപ്പിറവി (keralappiravi) the birth of Kerala THE STORY It begins before writing, with stone — megalithic burial sites across Kerala, dolmens, rock-cut chambers and large burial urns, Iron Age, from roughly the first millennium BCE. We do not know what language those people spoke. But they were here, they worked iron, and they buried their dead with care. Then the trade. By the first century CE Kerala was inside the Roman economy. The great port the Greeks and Romans called Muziris appears in a first-century merchants' handbook, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, with the route, the winds and what could be bought. Roman gold hoards have been found in Kerala soil; excavations at Pattanam near Kodungallur have produced Mediterranean amphora fragments. Pliny the Elder complained that the empire was haemorrhaging gold to India every year — for pepper above all. Kerala's first appearance in world history is as the place Rome could not stop buying from. And it worked because of the monsoon: sail one wind out, wait, sail the other wind home. Quizzes below.
