My friend broke into another peal of laughter: "But where do you think he would go?"

Anywhere. Straight ahead of him.
这时，小王子郑重其事地说：“这没有什么关系，我那里很小很小。
Then the little prince said, earnestly: "That doesn’t matter. Where I live, everything is so small!"
接着，他略带伤感地又补充了一句：“一直朝前走，也不会走出多远”
And, with perhaps a hint of sadness, he added: "Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far..."

さて、今日は「日本人の名前」についてお話ししたいと思います。
突然ですが、皆さんに質問です。100年前、人気の女の子の名前は、どういう名前だったでしょうか？
① カタカナ二文字
② 漢字一文字
③ 最後に子供の「子」がつく名前
正解は、③の最後に子供の「子」がつく名前です。
実は、ある調査によると、1921年から1956年まで、女の子の人気の名前TOP10は、全部「子」がつく名前だったそうです。
それまでは、カタカナやひらがなで二文字の名前がTOP10の半分くらいを占めていました。例えば、ハル、キヨ、ヨシ、フミなどですね。
1950年代後半からは、「子」に加えて、「美」の字を使った名前も少しずつ人気になりました。例えば、明美、真由美、直美、由美などです。
そして、1970年代後半になると、「子」がつかない名前がだんだん増えていき、恵や愛など、漢字一文字の名前もTOP10に入るようになりました。
私が生まれた年の女の子の名前TOP3は、美咲、愛、美穂でした。
息子が生まれたころになると、女の子も男の子も、漢字一文字の名前が人気でした。
お気づきかと思いますが、私の名前にも「子」がつきます。私の世代では、「子」がつく名前はそれほど多くなくて、クラスに数人いるかいないかくらいでした。私より5歳、10歳若い世代になると、さらに少なくなって、ほとんどいないと思います。
では、なぜ100年前、「子」という漢字が女性の名前として人気になったのでしょうか。
もともと、約1500年前には、蘇我馬子（そがのうまこ）、中臣鎌子（なかとみのかまこ）、小野妹子（おののいもこ）など、昔の有名な男性の名前にも「子」という漢字が使われていました。
そして、約1200～800年前の平安時代になると、「子」が上流階級の女性の名前として定着し始めました。彰子（しょうし）、定子（ていし）など、「し」と読む名前も多く見られます。
その後、明治、大正時代になると、「子」がつく名前が一般女性にも広がりました。
つまり、もともとは身分の高い女性に多かった名前が、近代になって一般女性の間でも大流行したんです。
ちなみに、現在の女性皇族の名前には、すべて「子」がついています。
私より若い皇族女性で、佳子（かこ）さまがいらっしゃいます。読み方は違いますが、私の名前と同じ漢字なんですよ。
