Description
In English, word order tells you who did what: "Anu called Amma" is not "Amma called Anu". English speakers translate directly, keep English order and forget the ending, so they say "njaan amma vilichu", which sounds like "I, Amma, called". Malayalam marks the person who receives the action with a small tail, -e. In this episode: • The big rule: people and animals get -e • The shapes: -e, -ye, -ne, -ine, -vine • Pronouns as objects • Animals at home • One ending, a different meaning • An invented scene: who called whom? • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: àŽ…àŽµàŽšàµ† àŽµàŽ¿àŽ³àŽ¿àŽ•àµàŽ•àµ (avane vilikku) = call him. àŽ…àŽ®àµàŽ®àŽ¯àµ† àŽžàŽ¹àŽŸàŽ¯àŽ¿àŽ•àµàŽ•àµ (ammaye sahaayikku) = help Amma. àŽ•àµàŽŸàµàŽŸàŽ¿àŽ¯àµ† àŽšàµ‹àŽ•àµàŽ•àµ (kuttiye nokku) = look after the child. àŽšàŽŸàŽ¯ àŽ•àµàŽŸàŽ¿àŽ•àµàŽ•àµ (chaaya kudikku) = drink the tea.
