Requests, Refusals and Saving Face | Spoken Malayalam #164
Description
English speakers make requests with "please" and refuse with a clear "no, sorry". Translated directly, a request becomes a bare command and a refusal becomes a blunt പറ്റില്ല (pattilla) = can't, which can sound cold. Malayalis soften requests with the little word ഒന്ന് (onnu) and a question ending, and they often refuse without ever saying no: ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് നോക്കട്ടെ (njaan onnu nokkatte) = let me see, can be a gentle "probably not".
In this episode:
• Requests at three strengths
• Soft refusals
• Accepting graciously
• Reading a soft refusal you receive
