#002 Ege Sahilinde
Description
"
Denizde kayık.
Sessizce sallanıyor.
Güneş batarken.
"
[00:00] Welcome to another episode of Bitesize Turkish Haikus. Tek Isırımlık Türkçe Haikuların bir bölümüne daha hoş geldiniz.
[00:11] Today's poem is as follows:
"
Denizde kayık.
Sessizce sallanıyor.
Güneş batarken.
"
[00:23] I'll read it one more time.
"
Denizde kayık.
Sessizce sallanıyor.
Güneş batarken.
"
[00:33] And here's a rough translation.
"
A boat on the sea
Rocking quietly
As the sun sets
"
[00:44] And today's grammar is -de/-da, the locative suffix. It means 'at', 'in', or 'on'.
[00:55] Deniz, on its own, means 'the sea'.
[01:00] You might already have heard that.
[01:03] You might even have a friend named Deniz. It's also a given name. And it's even gender-neutral, but let's not digress, shall we?
[01:15] You add the locative suffix, -de to 'deniz', and you get 'denizde'. On the sea.
[01:25] The vowel in the suffix may change depending on the last vowel in the word.
[01:35] If it ends in a front vowel like 'e', 'i', 'ö', 'ü', we use '-de'.
[01:47] If it's a back vowel, or as we say in Turkish, 'kalın ünlü', which are 'a', 'ı', 'o' or 'u', we use '-da'.
[02:00] 'Ev', meaning house, becomes 'evde', at home.
[02:05] 'Masa', meaning table, becomes 'masada', on the table.
[02:12] 'Sahil', meaning shore, becomes 'sahilde', on the shore.
[02:20] It's all the same idea. Well, one more time, the whole haiku:
"
Denizde kayık.
Sessizce sallanıyor.
Güneş batarken.
"
[02:35] See you in the next episode.
