Final Review I: Sounds, Script and Numbers | Spoken Malayalam #131
Description
You have come a long way since the sound episodes at the start of the course, and old habits creep back. The commonest one: English speakers relax the sounds that English does not care about, so long vowels get short, double consonants get single, and ഴ (zha) turns into an l. Each of these can quietly change a word into a different word, so കള്ളം (kallam) = a lie becomes കളം (kalam) = a square.
In this episode:
• Vowel length, the half u and double consonants
• Tongue-curl sounds, zha, and the two rs and ls
• Nasals, aspirates and rhythm
• Manglish and the script
• Numbers and prices
• Time, parts of the day and days
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key phrases from this episode:
കട്ടി (katti) = thickness versus കാട്ടി (kaatti) = showed
വീട് (veedu) = house, പേര് (peru) = name, കണ്ടു (kandu) = saw
അമ്മ (amma) = mother, കുട്ടി (kutti) = child, എല്ലാം (ellaam) = everything
കളം (kalam) = a square, a space versus കള്ളം (kallam) = a lie
കല (kala) = art versus കള (kala) = weed: the second l is curled
വല (vala) = net versus വള (vala) = bangle: again the second l is curled
കര (kara) = shore versus കറ (kara) = stain
ഭക്ഷണം (bhakshanam) = food, സുഖം (sukham) = well-being
വരുമോ? (varumo?) = Will you come?
കഴിച്ചോ? (kazhicho?) = Have you eaten?
എത്ര മണിയായി? (ethra maniyaayi?) = What time is it?
