Description
When English speakers tell a story, they glue actions with "and then": I got up, and then I had a bath, and then I drank tea. In Malayalam they reach for പിന്നെ (pinne) = then, again and again: ഞാൻ എഴുന്നേറ്റു, പിന്നെ കുളിച്ചു, പിന്നെ ചായ കുടിച്ചു (njaan ezhunnettu, pinne kulichu, pinne chaaya kudichu). It is understood, but it sounds like a list read aloud. In this episode: • The chain form • Only the last verb tells the time • First this, then that: -ittu • When and while: -umbol • Without doing: -aathe • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: പോയി (poyi) = having gone, went and എടുത്ത് (eduthu) = having taken, took and കുടിച്ച് (kudichu) = having drunk, drank and വന്ന് (vannu) = having come, came and കുളിച്ച് (kulichu) = having bathed അവൻ ബാഗ് എടുത്ത് ഇറങ്ങി (avan baagu eduthu irangi) = he picked up his bag and left കുളിച്ചിട്ട് കഴിക്ക് (kulichittu kazhikku) = have your bath, then eat കൈ കഴുകിയിട്ട് ഇരിക്ക് (kai kazhukiyittu irikku) = wash your hands, then sit down ചോറ് കഴിച്ചിട്ട് പോകാം (choru kazhichittu pokaam) = let's go after eating എന്നിട്ട്?
