Description
The Malayalam verb never changes for person, number or gender, so you can see the whole system in a single class. The earlier verb classes built the machine piece by piece. This one lays out the full architecture at once. Six subjects share one form (ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു, അവർ പോകുന്നു), so the system is just a stack of endings: three tenses, a negative suffix, ഇല്ല vs അല്ല, ability with പറ്റും, prohibition with -അരുത്, a politeness ladder for commands, the perfect, if and even if, and the causative. It ends by running വരുക through fifteen forms, with a three-minute daily drill as homework. Words and phrases in this class: ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു (njaan pokunnu) – I am going പോയി (poyi) – went പോകും (pokum) – will go പോയില്ല (poyilla) – did not go പോകില്ല (pokilla) – will not go എനിക്ക് സമയം ഇല്ല (enikku samayam illa) – I don't have time ഇത് എന്റെ വീട് അല്ല (ithu ente veedu alla) – this is not my house എനിക്ക് പോകാൻ പറ്റും (enikku pokaan pattum) – I can manage to go പോകരുത് (pokaruthu) – must not go വേണ്ട (venda) – no need; don't പോകാമോ? (pokaamo?) – could you go? (polite) മഴ പെയ്താലും ഞാൻ വരും (mazha peythaalum njaan varum) – even if it rains, I will come വരൂ, ഇരിക്കൂ, ചായ കുടിക്കൂ (varoo, irikkoo, chaaya kudikkoo) – come, sit, drink tea In this class: • One verb form for every person, and why there are no conjugation tables • Three tenses, the negative suffix, and ഇല്ല (existence) vs അല്ല (identity) • Moods: ability, prohibition, the command ladder, the perfect, if and even if • The causative, then one verb run through fifteen forms Quizzes below.
