Episode 20：今年の漢字

みなさん、こんにちは！
お久しぶりです。
前回のアップロードから、少し時間が経ってしまいましたが、みなさんいかがお過ごしでしょうか？
今日本は梅雨の時期なので、雨の日が多かったり、湿度の高い日々が続いたりしています。
でもこの時期は紫陽花(あじさい)の花がいろんなところで咲いているので、紫陽花を観るのがこの時期の楽しみの一つです。
みなさんが住んでいる地域は、今どんな気候ですか？

では、今日の本題に入っていきたいと思います。
前回のポッドキャストの最後でもお知らせしましたが、今回のテーマは「お手洗い」についてです。
「お手洗い」つまり「おトイレ」ですが、例えば、みなさんがお友達の家に行って、トイレに行きたくなったらなんて言いますか？ちょっと考えてみてください。
どうですか？どんなアイディアが浮かびましたか？
中国語を直接日本語に言い換えると、「あなたの家のお手洗いはどこですか？」
英語を日本語に言い換えると、「お手洗いを使ってもいいですか？」
となりますね。
もしリスナーの皆さんが日本人のお友達の家に行って、そういう風に言ったとしても、恐らく意味は伝わると思います。
でも、普段日本人が使うのは別の表現です。
年上の人や、知り合って間もない人には「すみません、ちょっとお手洗いをお借りしてもいいですか？/お借りできますか？」
仲の良いお友達には「お手洗い借りるね」とか、「お手洗い借りてもいい？」という風に言います。
「どこですか？」とか「使ってもいいですか？」という表現ではなく、「借りてもいいですか？」という表現をするんですね〜。

ここで少し、私がマレーシアにいた時のエピソードをお話ししたいと思います。
マレーシアには、マレー語・英語・中国語・タミル語など色々な言語を話す人達が集まっていますが、私は主に中国語(Mandarin-Chinese)と英語でコミュニケーションをとっていました。
ある日、華人のお友達の家に遊びに行っていて、お手洗いに行きたくなったので、私は日本語をそのまま中国語にして
“请问，我可不可以借你家的洗手间吗？”と言いました。
その友人はジョークを言うのが大好きな人だったので、もちろん冗談ですが“不可以”と返してきました。
「なんでダメなの？」と聞くと、「だって、いいかダメか聞いてきたから、ダメって言ったら我慢できるんでしょ？www」と言われ。。。私は「いや、我慢はできないんだけど。じゃあ、トイレを借りたい時は何て言ったらいいの？」と聞くと、「お手洗いはどこ？って聞くだけでいいんだよ。」“你讲，你家的洗手间在哪里？就可以了“と言われました。『「行きたい」「行かなきゃ」っていう状況なのに、「行ってもいい？」と聞くのはナンセンスだ。そもそも、「借りる」という言葉は中国語でも英語でも動かせる物に対して使う。トイレの便器は持ってきて貸してあげられるものじゃないから、「借りる」という単語は使わないよ。』と説明してくれました。
この出来事は、私にとって文化と表現の違いをもっと理解したいと思うきっかけになりました。
「親しき仲にも礼儀あり」という諺があり、日本は礼儀を重んじる文化です。
「トイレに行きたい」と言う時にも、こういう文化的背景があって、「お借りできますか？」という表現になるのだと私は思っています。
こういう表現は一定の距離感を感じますが、日本人である私にとっては快適距離感でもあるように思えます。
それに対して、中国語の表現からは距離感の近さ・親しさ、というのを感じて、温かい気持ちになります。
どちらがいい、という事ではなく、その国の人々の表現方法から感じ取れる事や理解できる文化がありますよね。
また、その国で一般的に使われている表現を使った方が、現地の人たちに受け入れてもらいやすいですし、友達も作りやすいので、みなさんが日本で日本人の家に行った時にトイレを使いたくなったら、ぜひ「お手洗いお借りしてもいいですか？」と言ってみてください。

In today's episode we learn an anecdote about the American tourists who once met the Queen and had no idea who she was. Here's the story. 

Key Vocabulary:
An anecdote   /ˈanɪkdəʊt/   noun  = a short, interesting story about a real incident or person.
To play a prank on someone = To carry out a trick, deception, or practical joke on someone.
To pull someone's leg  =  to deceive someone playfully; tease someone.
Cantankerous	/kanˈtaŋk(ə)rəs/ adjective   = bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative.
To be a fly on the wall =  you would like to hear what will be said or see what will happen while not being noticed

Former Royal Protection Officer, Richard Griffin said he and the Queen met the American hikers one day while they were walking near Balmoral Castle, her holiday home in Scotland.
"The Queen would always stop and say hello," Griffin said. "And it was clear from the moment we first stopped that they hadn't recognized the Queen."
Griffin said one of the Americans asked the Queen where she lived.
"She said, 'Well I live in London, but I've got a holiday home near here,"' Griffin recalled. 
The hiker then asked if she had ever met Queen Elizabeth.
"Well I haven't, but Richard here meets her regularly," the Queen replied.
The hiker then turned to Griffin and asked: "Oh, you've met the Queen? What's she like?"
"I decided to pull her leg, so I said, 'she can be very cantankerous at times, but she's got a lovely sense of humour".
The American then got his camera out, and gave it to the Queen, asking if she could take a picture of him with the royal protection officer. "Then we swapped places and I took a picture of them with the Queen and we waved goodbye". "The Queen said to me, 'I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographs to their friends —  hopefully someone tells him who I am.'"

Hola a todos/as! En Este breve podcast comparto una característica importante del ACENTO ESPAÑOL RIOPLATENSE >> 'la S aspirada'. Este sonido puede a veces confundirnos cuando escuchamos a una persona hablando, tal vez no identificamos una palabra (que en realidad si conocemos) porque la pronunciación es diferente. 

Te invito a escucharme cómo uso 'la s aspirada' y si te animas y tenes ganas a probar cómo hacer este sonido vos mismo. 

Como siempre digo, no es necesario aprender todos los acentos del español y poder imitarlos, pero si (en mi opinión) es una idea genial jugar a entenderlos!
