Teens and Tens: Numbers in Sound — Thirteen or Thirty? | Understanding Indian English #054
Description
The most expensive listening mistake in business English is hearing "fifteen" when the speaker said "fifty", or the other way round. American and British listeners separate the two mostly by stress: "fifTEEN" has the weight at the end, "FIFty" at the start. In Indian English the weight difference between syllables is smaller, as earlier episodes explained, so the stress cue is weak or absent.
What you will learn:
• Why stress will not save you
• The three cues that work
• The TH in numbers
• Confirmation habits
• Prices and big numbers
• Times, dates and percentages
• What varies
• Practice: decode the sentence
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
