1. "Goes sideways" here means messed up or screwed up,right?
2. I can't get what does mean "Until" in "until it didn't" .

2: It means: Both of you being equally difficult, may indeed have make things work, up to the moment when it no longer did. IE, until it didn't work any more.
Until... = Up to the moment when...
For example: I will keep running until I get tired = I will keep running up to the moment when I get tired = I will keep running but I will stop when I get tired.

Until it didn't. - the difficulty between the two did not interfere in their friendship, until one day it did.
