If I were a rich man, or had inherited a huge fortune, I would not have learned English, and I would have hired a handsome interpreter to serve me anytime I wished. If I had been born in America or Great Britain, or had immigrated to an English speaking country as a child, I would not have needed to learn English. If I had been living in a small quiet village where I had no need to speak English with others, I would not have learned English. However, I am not RICH, and I was born in Shanghai, an international city. So now I have to get this fundamental skill to live in this cruel society, competing with others in a brutal workplace.
