Writing Exercise 307 – HOW DARE YOU? Today, I bought some food from the market
where I usually go. The market is not only known for supplying a variety of
the freshest food, but it is also renowned for its managerial principles to
make sure the traders who run businesses in the market behave with
integrity. However, not all of the traders act in good faith. Here is a case
concerning me. This morning, I selected half a chicken from one of the
meat stalls and asked the owner for the price. After bargaining, we reached the
deal. Then she weighed the food and I paid the amount as she asked for. After
that, I took the chicken with me and left the stall. After finishing all my shopping, as usual I weighed all the things one by one on a weighing
scale provided by the market administrators. Every single thing weighed what its owner claimed, apart from the chicken, which
was 22% less than she said. I immediately went back to the stall, put the
food on her scale, then asked her, ” HOW DARE YOU?” She obviously realized what I
meant and said sorry to me timidly, while reweighing the food. This time, her
scale showed the same weight as the public one. You may ask, "Why?” That's
because it is an open secret that some treacherous merchants play tricks with
their scales, there is a secret button that the owner can stealthily
control to weigh heavier than the stuff should be when they think the customers
don't know the secret. However, they dare not to do it when they notice that the
customers may be smart. Eventually, not only did I get back the money that I
overpaid, but I also took a picture of the billboard hung on her stall. I will
never buy food from her stall again.
