I am reading an English translation of the above mentioned book (as I do not speak Japanese). The foreword (written in 1960) says that this book is very famous in Japan and Yaji and Kita is like a household name. I wanted to check if this is still true today. How famous is this book and what do Japanese people associate with this travelogue from the 18/19th century?
If you know any famous Japanese travel books, I would appreciate if you could tell me some names or titles.
Ikku Jippensha! wow, authentic! I didn't know it was translated in foreign languages. Thank you for sharing it, Alex. It was written about Japanese lives and traveling in Edo period of 1800's when samurai still existed.

The book I am reading is not rewritten, but an unabridged translation from the Tokaido section of Hizakurige by Ikku Jippensha. The translator is Thomas Satchell published by Tuttle publication which specializes on Japan, China and South-East-Asia.
I've never met a person who read Yaji &Kita. The name of the book is quite famous as people learn it in history classes as a popular book in 1802.The book that you are reading might be rewritten by someone. There might have been TV show to mimic Yaji & Kita as a comedy in 1960-70. Young people nowadays probably don't know what Yaji & Kita is. I know only the name but no idea about the contents.
