For most Chinese learners, the first meaning they learned for 有 yǒu, is probably its basic meaning: ‘to possess, to have’. However, that is only one part of the story.
Very interesting. When using for comparison, is this kinda the opposite of using 比 ? If I understand correctly, when using 比 you want to indicate a difference, as opposed to 有 which indicates an equality.
Great article! I'm trying to understand how 有 works in he following type of sentence, which I see a lot. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how it fits into any of the seven uses shown in this article.
她有在開公車嗎
Thank you!
I had seen all these uses (with one exception) of 有, so it was a great review for me.
The one exception was already mentioned by Luc: use of 有 for comparison. For example, you gave the example,
他有他爸爸那么高。
He is as tall as his father.
I've been taught to translate this as
他跟他爸爸一样高。
I wonder if they mean the same thing?
是不是也可以说,比如:我有去了法国,或者,我有看过那部电影?
Another great article in an not overcomplex and concise manner. Thanks.
I pretty much new that ???? could be used in all of these situations, but your articles puts my usage into context.
