Professional TeacherIn Spanish, some nouns end in -a but are actually masculine. This happens mainly for historical or etymological reasons, not logic.
Examples include:
el día (the day)
el mapa (the map)
el planeta (the planet)
el sofá (the sofa)
el problema / el sistema / el tema (Greek-origin words ending in -ma)
Even though they look feminine, you must use el and masculine adjectives with them.
