Foot Binding(缠足) Foot binding is unique to China's feudal society as a cruel custom. With regard to its origin, we generally believed that it began in the Five Dynasties and Ten States (五代十国)over 1,000 years ago. It is said that one of Li Yu's(李煜, the last Emperor of Later Tang Dynasty)harems reshaped her foot much more small in order to dancing better to obtain his favor. Since then, almost all ancient Chinese women had to suffer from the destruction of their body at their early age. This was not because they had to please the Emperors, but because the ancient Chinese men thought that women with bound feet had a better walking posture than those not. Months after toppling the Qing Dynasty and resulting in a republican government, China's founding father Sun Yat-sen soon ordered a ban on foot binding in March 11th, 1912. However, this cruel custom still existed in China many years after the ban. A book named "Women of Chinese" stated that the last generation of foot-binding women were already nearly 100 years. However, I do not agree with this statement. In the middle 1980s, when I was still a little boy, a girl in my village was forced to foot-binding by her parents and village folks. Days later, fearing the intense pain of foot-binding, another girl escaped when she learnt that she would be bound feet. I once asked my grandma how much pain it was. She said that it was so much pain that girls must be tightly held by adults while it was going on. As far as I know, to make their feet growing in expected shape, girls' foot bones had to be broken by hand!
