Although it seems that naked marriage has gained it’s tendency, (Naked marriage is a man and a woman to get married without a house, car, grand wedding ceremony and even wedding rings.) no matter how simple the traditional wedding of chinese is, giving betrothal gift is indispensalbe. How much of the betrothal gifts will be is proposed by the bride’s parents and the usual betrothal gifts include wedding ring, the needs of the bride, dragon & phoenix candles, pork, chicken, wine, candy, biscuit, feeding money and money put in red packets for various traditional items. My cousin has just had a wedding. According to him, the least betrothal gifts cost about ten thousand RMB nowadays and his was sixteen thousand RMB. Do you have the tradition of giving betrothal gift in your country? In Engand, friends and relatives often give wedding gifts to the bride and groom, but there are not really any rules, traditions or expectations any more. You can get married for less than £130. How much is spent on the other things (reception, cake, clothes, homeymoon, drink, entertainment, etc etc) varies a lot. Sometimes the bride and groom pay for everything; other times it will be their parents.

Clouds, We received red envelopes also (my wife is Taiwanese), as well as other gifts. Here, a gift of money is usually given as a check in a normal envelope. Because we are older and already had two households (which we joined), we probably didn't get as many gifts as a younger couple would have. Gifts are given out of generosity, but to attend and not bring any gift shows very poor manners.

In my country, a man should have a good enough job to demonstrate that he has the ability to support a wife and family, even though most women also work outside the home. For the wedding itself, the old tradition was that the groom or his family paid for the banquet the night before for the close members of both families and the other ceremony participants; bridesmaids, ushers, flower girl, ring bearers, etc. The bride's parents paid for the wedding ceremony and the reception held afterward for all guests. Those traditions are going away, but not completely gone. When I married four years ago, we kept it very simple. The reception for 80 people cost about $ 5,000. It was very nice and the food was excellent but we went to a normal restaurant. Going to a banquet hall that just does weddings may cost $100-200 per person. If the wedding is large (200-300 people), it (only the reception dinner) can be very expensive. I've heard of $50,000 to $100,000 with all the flowers and limousines, but very few families are that affluent.
