"Présenter" and "se présenter"
What first comes to mind considering this verb is that "présenter" actually means to make something or someone "present" ("présent") to the mind of someone !
Thus, you can "présenter" an object, namely extending your hands to give it out ("présentez armes !" in military), a subject ("présenter un travail de thèse" at university), or even a person ("je te présente ma nouvelle amie Maryse" as between friends)
So, please be mindful of what you do when you "présenter" yourself. "Se présenter" (introduce yourself), is to the French, basically, a matter of general appearance...
