Is pizza fast food? Maybe, but not in Italy. Hi guys, my Irish teacher of English told me that pizza, typical Italian dish, is considered by the people of England and USA, fast-food. Is that true? In Italy pizza is a dish cooked at the restaurant or in a "pizzeria" by a specialized cook, and is required a lot of time and competences to make it. For me fast food are hot dogs and similar, because are dishes that is possible to cook in a few minutes, while to make pizza we have to wait from 5 to 18 hours only for the leavening, and than it needs to prepare the condiments. I like eating, and when I travel around the world i always try typical dishes (and i like eating also fast-food), but hear that pizza is fast-food, for me is a little bit strange. What do you think? What Italian dish do you prefer?

Hi guys,

My English teacher, who is Irish, told me that pizza, a classic Italian dish, is considered by people of England and the USA, fast food. Is this true? In Italy, pizza is a dish cooked in a restaurant or pizzeria by a specialized cook, and requires a lot of time and expertise to make it.
For me, what makes food “fast food”, are meals that can be cooked in a few minutes, like hot dogs and other foods with low preparation times. When making pizza, the wait-time for the leavening alone is 5 to 18 hours, while even more time is spent preparing condiments.
I like to eat, and when I travel around the world, I always try the national dishes of each country (as well as fast food), but when I hear that pizza is fast food, for me, this is a little bit strange.
What do you think? What Italian dish do you prefer?

I would not really consider pizza to be fast food and I live in the US. Fast food is considered food from MacDonald's, Wendy's (hamburgers etc). While there are places like Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa John's that serve pizza and you can sit down and eat it quickly (and it is horrible)...the best pizza are still found in Italian family restaurants and pizzerias throughout the country, which are more high quality. Best pizzas are in New York (I was a New Yorker) because of all the Italians immigrants who immigrated there years ago. Though you can eat pizza quickly I don't consider it fast food. My favorite Italian food (I am half Italian)....lasagna and gnocchi.

In America the frequency of "authentic" or "gourmet" pizzerias to fast food pizzerias is very low. Pizza is a common fast food here at places such as Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, etc. although there are many authentic restaurants that take pride in their high quality pizzas. On the contrary, there are not many gourmet hot dog restaurants (Although Chicago does take a lot of pride in their hot dogs) so you are probably correct about that being fast food!
