REPORT: Influence of English-language in TV programmes in my country
Writing task: An international media company is investigating the influence that television programmes imported from English-speaking countries have on different countries around the world. You have been asked to write a report on English-language TV programmes in your country. In your report you should address the following:
- how popular theses programmes are and why
- the effect they are having on local culture
- any changes you would recommend
Introduction
The aim of this report is to analyse the influence of English-language TV shows in my country. Basically, how English-speaking TV programmes can affect the local culture and whether these TV shows are popular among people. Finally, I will comment some suggestions about changes which could be applied in order to improve the acceptance of imported programmes on the local audience.
Popularity of foreign TV programmes
Spain is a country with strongly rooted traditions, which means that is difficult to successfully introduce imported products in this lands. This could explain why English-speaking TV programmes do not reach popularity enough, despite that the subtitles options are currently available in most smart televisions. The English language is not widely abroad in the Spanish population, and we do not get used to watching original versions of foreign TV shows. Therefore, films, series and TV programmes must have voice translation before its broadcasting.
The popularity of imported TV programmes is low, at least they have been previously modified according to Spanish culture.
Effects on local culture
The English-language programmes have a moderate to low effect on local culture. As I said above, imported programmes need to be arranged before its emission. Language seems to be the main factor for this lack of involvement, however, a mismatch related to costumes, food and daily habits between English and Spanish culture may have a key role as well.
Recommended changes
I would recommend that English TV programmes should include local assistance regarding Spanish culture and traditions as part of their team production. A person or a team in charge of supervising what type of foods, collocations and family behaviours are the more suitable for being included in scripts and layouts of imported TV programmes.

Hi Mariel, this looks like a CAE/CPE writing - it would be best to post the question as well so that teachers can consider task achievement. If you're not sure what I mean, I have a video on Youtube that explains the examiner criteria in detail. Let me know if you need the link!
